Into The Forest I Go

A documentary film, 91 min

Into The Forest I Go is a feature-length film that delves into the soul of the forest people, the Finnish nation. The film in its entirety is set in the forest: the protagonists sleep under spruce trees, hunt with their dog, hold techno raves in the summer night and feed the beasts of the forest. The forest gives us more than we can ever ask for.

The film has many characters, including Pentti Linkola, an 81-year-old radical thinker who lives as he preaches, having withdrawn to a small cottage in the forest and founded an organisation for protecting virgin forests. Vesa compensates nature for some of the damage caused by logging operations by building a nest for eagles at the edge of a clearcut forest clearing. Markku, an artist who draws his inspiration from the Finnish landscape, portrays himself in the forest, dressed as Elvis, as a sketch for one of his paintings. Niina has inherited a forest plot and, contrary to the forestry association, wants to tend to it in an ecologically sustainable manner. We will also hear stories of personal relationships with the forest from forest owners, a hunter, a nature surveyor, a bird ringer, a nature activist, a forestry consultant and a hermit living in the forest.

As the film progresses, we begin to gain a more and more versatile view of the forest as a biological organism, as a spiritual retreat for humans, as a church, as a source of inspiration and as a complete living environment.
